Bandera Ecológica (Ecological Flag) is a voluntary environmental certification given by the Costa Rican Ministry of the Environment.

The program which has been succesfully running for over 5 years now has yielded some important lessons.

There is a substantially growing number of firms who are very actively setting up or implementing their environmental management systems. But, most firms are unaware of all the requirements of national environmental legislation.

The program provides a credible and consistent certification scheme, which includes an independent audit.

Participating firms acquire useful knowledge, which in many cases has improved their efficiency and reduced their pollution and energy use
